Happy Groundhog Day!

Who is making the red carpet walk today? Why it’s Punxsutawney Phil!  Phil is a national icon – but he is also a proud resident of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. What is it going to be this year – spring or winter? I’m voting for spring Phil!

For the official information on Phil and his hometown, be sure to visit their website.  Learn more about the Inner Circle that serves Phil as well as preserves his legacy. If you’re going to be in the area – check out the events page and before to take plenty of photos during your stay!

Arizona Abner

Punxsutawney Phil’s cousin, Arizona Abner, was buried alive under a K-Mart parking lot, reports The Furious Bandercoot.  Consequently, seven years of summers are expected for the whole state of Arizona.

Foster Greyhound Arrival

This Saturday marks the arrival of my mother’s first foster greyhound. Her excitement has been overwhelming as she bought a brand new bed for the foster (and of course her resident greyhound) as well as new harness, leash, treats, etc. No worries, her current greyhound and cattledog are also getting new toys and treats as the family is well aware that no one canine should be more spoiled than another! Mother graciously accepted the opportunity to be a foster home – I had done it several times and absolutely adore it! Each time I took the dog(s) to visit my family and it was always a warm reception. Unfortunately my current living situation doesn’t allow for a foster…but hopefully that will soon change!

Keystone Greyhounds has such an amazing team of volunteers that have coordinated several hauls with greyhounds from closing tracks in the North East. This Saturday two vans will be arriving in Pennsylvania with dogs from these tracks. I have bags of biscuits (yes, I know I still have to deliver them) waiting for all the fosters and their friends.

I’ll be sure to keep you all posted on the arriving hounds as well as post pictures and stories! Oh how I miss these greyt pets!

The dogs that will be arriving are featured on Keystone Greyhounds adoption page. Test Score is the lucky gentleman that will be staying with mother and his greyt brother Mickey.

Can’t wait to meet him!

Squirrel Appreciation Day

Thank you January 21 – for bringing us “Squirrel Appreciation Day!” An even bigger thank you to Christy Hargrove of Asheville, North Carolina for starting Squirrel Appreciation Day in 2001.

Take some time to honor your favorite furry friends and perhaps lay out a few extra nuts for them.

My personal favorite, Bud-Bud.

To Spit, Or Not to Spit

Fairly certain that is what this alpaca was considering as he gazed into the flash of my camera. Fortunately, he chose the latter – or at least I walked away just moments before the firing.

The Nose Knows

While this enticingly soft rabbit was found near the “dinner rabbits” display – I don’t think I could have enjoyed him for supper.

Thanks Snapple

While enjoying a tasty, cool, refreshing bottle of diet Snapple peach tea (unfortunately I was not reimbursed for that endorsement) I recently learned that “armadillo’s only have babies of the same sex”. Ie, in one “batch” of armadillo babies – they will be all boys or all girls.

At least that makes it easy for the baby shower gifts. But boy, do you think dad armadillos are bummed when its an all girl showing? *Not my picture below, click on it to view the source. I think it is adorable though!

Horses and French Fries

Driving home from work a few days ago, I began to think about one of my favorite animals: the horse.

Oh how I long to have lived in the day when the horse was the preferred method of transportation. To ride such a noble animal to and from work would be heaven. (Provided I didn’t work so far from home – the current miles traveled would probably take most of my required 8 hours in the saddle.) The thought is so peaceful. No honking horns, being cut off on horse-back really isn’t so bad and rush hour wouldn’t feel so…rushed.

Then I quickly panicked: how would drive-through windows work?

While I have a love for horses and the saddle, I do have a love for french fries as well. Mmmm…so salty, crispy and warm. Would saddle bags be enough to do the trick? Could there be a cup holder that one could attach to a western saddle horn?

The notion of riding my gallant steed to work was short lived.

But just imagine…horses and french fries on the next drive home. Or horses and donuts on your next drive to work.

Ol’ Bessie

I would have hated to see what her mother looked like – size wise that is. Secondly, this is where strawberry milk comes from right? Thank you Turkey Hill for all of your ice cream and support of local dairy farms. (And thank you for the really big marketing display that kids can “milk”.)

Welcome 2010

Christmas Cats ‘09

Oh Christmas cat, oh Christmas cat…

How lovely are your whiskers.
